Abstract
The chloroform extract of the leaves of A. vulgaris Linn. urns analyzed for its major sesquiterpene lactone component based on the intensity of the spots on the thin layer chromatogram developed in an iodine chamber. The extract was chromatographed through a column of silica gel and the major fraction was purified by preparative thin-layer chromatography. The major band (if 0.31) on the chromatogram yielded colorless needle-like crystals which melted immediately to a colorless liquid on a stage preheated to 181oC.
Analysis of the ir, pmr„ uv and mass spectra of the crystal indicates that the compound is a sesquiterpene dilactone. MW 278. it was tentatively assigned to have the structure of compound A(IV).
