Abstract

Milkfish (Chanos chanos), Tilapia (Tapia mosambica and Mudfish (Ophicephalus stritus) were collected from Laguna de lay in April and October, 1990. fish samples were analyzed for cadmium, copper, lead and zinc by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry.

The largest metal concentrations were observed in the inedible tissue, less in the whole tissue, and least in edible tissue with mean values (wet basis) of 5.02, 3.24 and 0.80 ppm for copper, respectively, and 15.91, 11.10 and 5.50 ppm for zinc, respectively. Cadmium Concentration in the edible tissue was not detected and mean values (wet basis) of 0.28 ppm in the inedible tissue and 0.20 ppm in the whole tissue were observed. Lead was not detected in all fish tissues.

Fish tissue concentrations were highest in omnivorous fish (Tilapia?, less in herbivorous fish Milkfish) and least in carnivorous fish (Mudfish) with mean values (wet basis? of 4.98, 2.83 and 1.28 ppm for copper, respectively. and 13.28, 9.88 and 9.42 ppm for zinc, respectively. No significant differences, however, were noted for cadmium.

Copper levels in the three fish species obtained in April were significantly higher than those obtained in - October while zinc and cadmium levels in the three fish species were significantly higher in October than in April.

In general the concentrations of copper, zinc, In gen, cadmium and lead in the edible tissue of the three fish species were low and within the permissible levels set on fish for human consumption.
