Selected physico-chemical properties of polypyrrole (PPy) and its forms doped with organic acids such as acetic acid, benzoic acid, and salicylic acid were calculated using HyperChem software. Small HOMO-LUMO energy gap, large bandwidth, low ionization potential, and high dipole moment were found to be correlated with high electrical conductivity. These were observed for the doped forms of PPy in comparison with the undoped form. This agrees with the experimental electrical conductivity of PPy measured using the four-point probe. The polypyrrole samples were chemically synthesized using ammonim peroxydisulfate (APS) as oxidant with each organic acid as dopant. All the doped forms of PPy have higher electrical conductivity than the undoped form. PPy-salicylate was found to be the most conductive among the doped forms of PPy which agrees with its computed molecular properties. All samples were characterized using IR spectroscopy. The IR absorption peaks corresponding to pyrrole rings and characteristic peaks for the three organic dopants were identified.
