Assessment of the drinking water quality was conducted on January 8 (wet season) and April 20, 2005 (dry season) on the six deep-well pump stations of the Laguna Water District in Los Banos to compare the values obtained for wet and dry season. The six pump stations were Putho, Lalakay, UPCO, Villegas, Sta. Rita and Vega pump stations. The water quality parameters analyzed were pH, temperature, conductivity, nitrate-nitrogen, copper and lead content.

Analyses showed that the mean values obtained during wet and dry seasons were as follows; 7.64 and 6.79 for pH; 34.6°C and 35.4°C for temperature; 286 pS/cm and 254 μS/cm for conductivity; 4.18 mg NO3-NIL and 4.78 mg NO3-N/L; 20 μg Cu/L and 5.4 μg Cu/L; and 7.4 μg Pb/L and 5.1μg Pb/L. All the water quality parameters determined fall within the maximum allowable limit set by the DENR.

The results showed that all the parameters analyzed were significantly different at 5% level of significance with respect to the season except for some cases in lead and copper content. Wet season generally gave higher values on pH, conductivity, nitrate-nitrogen concentration, copper contents and lead contents while dry season generally gave higher values on temperature. Plots of standard error versus number of replicates were used to determine the valid number of replicates in analyzing a water quality parameter. The study showed that more replications or trials were needed to reduce the standard error of the mean parameter during the wet season sampling compared to the dry season sampling.
