Abstract

Pimentel, Basilio Jr. D., College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines at Los Banos, March 1992. Levels of Cadmium, Copper, Lead and Zinc in Mussel (Mytilus smaraodinus) obtained from Bacoor Bay.

Adviser: Dr. Nieva T. Librojo-Basilio

Mussels L Mytilus smaraodinus ) were collected from Bacoor Bay in the sites of Philippine Navy (PN), Sta. Cruz and Caridad. These samples were analyzed for copper, cadmium, lead and zinc from November, 1991 to January 1992 using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer.

The meat of the mussels were found to contain zinc and copper in the levels of 6.6 to 12.0 ppm and 0.15 to 1.2 ppm, respectively. Zinc concentrations obtained from each location significantly decreased from November to December and then to January. With regard to copper, results obtained in January were significantly lower than the results obtained in either November or December for all sites of collection. Lead was also detected but no significant difference can be observed for each month in each site except for Caridad which gave no detectable values in December. No cadmium was detected in all samples analyzed,
