The homemade coated- wire ion- selective electrode was developed for the determination of nitrate in freshwater. The electrode is a copper wire coated with an active membrane composed of tris- 1,10- phenanthroline nickel (II) complex incorporated in polyvinyl chloride as the host matrix. The nitrate ions are capable of binding to the charged sites of the sensor.

The nitrate electrode showed a good Nemstian response in the concentration range of 10' — 10' M. The electrode has a detection limit of 10-5 M and mean response time varied from 1:38 minutes for the most concentrated solution and 5:54 minutes for the most diluted solution. It can function effectively at the pH range from 4 to 12.

The selectivity coefficient of the electrode towards C104', Cr, NO2' and SO4' ions was determined using the separate solution method. The electrode is highly selective to nitrate with very little to no interference effects from other anions. The electrode was stable for a week from the first day of use.

A water sample from Laguna de Bay was checked for the presence of nitrate. The concentration of nitrate was determined using the Standard Addition Technique and results were compared with a standard method of analysis. Deviations in results were explained in terms of the presence of other interfering ions not studied and errors committed during the analysis.
