Abstract

Elepanthopus scaber Linn. and Elephantopus tomentosue Linn, were investigated for the presence of sesquiterpene lactones which could have biological activity. The chloroform extract of E. escaber Linn yielded white needle-like crystals (0.035%) which were recrystallized from methanol and which gave a melting point of 150-a52oC and a positive specific rotation. The ir pur spectra indicate the presence of α ß unsaturated α -lactone and ester moities. The compound gave a maximum absorption in the uv at 216 mu (log 64.1) The data (ir, pur, and uv) indicate that the istructure of the compound may be related to deoxyelephantopin or isodexylephantopin.

the chloroform extract of E tometosus Linn. was found to have at least 9 components, The pmr spectrum of the crude syrup and the ir spectrum of the major fraction indicate the presence of an α, ß -unsaturated δ -lactone. It appears that the main sesquiterpene lactone component of E tomentupus Linn. is different from E. scaber Linn.
