Abstract

The chloroform extract of the leaves of Ele-phantopus tomentosus Linn. was analyzed for its minor wesquiterpene lactone components. Column chromatography followed by preparative thin-layer chromatography of the crude extract yielded five partially purified constituents. Designated Com-pounds LAR-lEt, LAR-2Et, LAR-3Et, LAR-4Et, and LAR-SEt, these are believed to be .4,0-unsaturated V-lactones of the germacranediolide type, varying in the ester side chains and hydroxyl groups. Partial structures are presented based on the IR, UV and PER spectral analyses and on bioge-netic considerations. Compound LAR-lEt is a hydroxylated germacranediolide with a 3-methy1-2-buten-oate ester side chain. Compound LAR-2Et is also hydroxylated with the methacrylate ester moiety side chain. Compound LAR-3Et is a germacranediolide
