Coconut coir dust has been reported to possess cation-exchange properties and has been utilized for heavy metal removal in aqueous systems. The unique property of coconut coir dust is attributable to strong affinity of ligno-cellulosic materials towards mulitivalent metal ions and served as the basis in the design of a novel carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with coconut coir described in this paper. Cyclic and differential pulse voltametric studies revealed that coconut coir dust-modified CPE (CocoCPE) is capable of non-electrolytic accumulation of lead(II) ions in aqueous solutions. Experimental conditions were optimized to establish the usability of CocoCPE in the analysis of lead by investigating the effects of modifier loading, preconcentration period, solution pH, and metal concentration on the voltammetric signal. Using the optimum conditions, electroanalysis of lead(11) using CocoCPE showed statistically acceptable reproducibility. Surface regeneration is also investigated by immersing the electrode for 3 minutes in 0.1M EDTA solution. The sensitivity was found to be 4.0 gA/ppm while the detection limit is 0.Ippm Pb(II). Interfernces of other metal species such as mercury, nickel, copper and cadmium were also investigated. This study holds great promise in extending the application of CocoCPE in the analysis of other heavy metal ions.
