Abstract

REALON, LOUELLA B. University of the Philippines Los Banos, Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, April 2005. Isolation and Characterization of Antifungal Compounds from Trichoderma harzianum Rifai.

Bioassay-guided chromatographic fractionation of the extract from Trichoderma harzianum Rifai yielded three fractions. Two of these fractions, CFA, and CF,A3, were found to be active against Frisarium oxysporum at 1000 ppm using the modified paper disc agar plate diffusion assay. CF2A2 was found to be more active having an inhibition zone of 9 mm in diameter.

Infrared spectroscopic analysis of compound CF2A2 revealed a strong -OH stretching. This suggested the presence of alcoholic or phenolic compound. This observation is supported by the '1-1 NMR that showed peaks in the aromatic region. The UV spectrum of this compound also supports this observation. In the case of CF2A3, infrared analysis also revealed a strong -OH stretching and the presence of an alkene. Likewise, these observations were supported by the 'H NMR and UV spectra.
