Abstract

REYES. LETICIA B. 1982. Lime and Coir Dust Ash Pretreatment of Rice Straw for Biomethanation. 2n undergraduate thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, under Dr. William G. Padolina, University of the Philippines at Los Banos. Second semester, 1981-82.

Comparison of the rice straw and fresh manure as substrate showed to he significantly different at level; the use of rice straw showed a much higher gas yield than the fresh manure. The effects of pretreating rice straw with lime and coir dust ash solutions on the biomethanation process were determined. Treatment of 3% and 9%, (w/v) lime solution appeared to increase the yield of binges at a such lower retention tine. Treatment with 3% and 9:4 coir dust ash solution also increased gas production, but found out to be statistically insignificant at 5% level. The use of 0.050 kg rice straw showed higher gas production than using 0.100 kg rice straw at a given concentration of live or coir dust ash solution. Lime treatment rice straw showed greater volatile solid (VS) reduction than either of the untreated or coir dust ash treated rice straw.
