The rapid test for Phenylurea herbicide, particularly 3-(3,4- dichloropheny1)-1,1-dimethlyurea, (diuron), in soil and plant sample was tested. Diuron was first hydrolyzed in a simple set up, and the product was added with NaNO2 to form a diazonium salt. Addition of N-(1-naphty1)- ethylenediamine dihydrochloride converted the salt into an azo dye, which is pink to violet solution depending on the diuron concentration, and can easily be visualized by the naked eye.
Soil and plant samples (Pechay) spiked with diuron of different concentrations were subjected to the method. The concentration of diuron in the resulting solution was confirmed quantitatively by spectrophotometry. The absorbances of the spiked plant leaves were compared to that of the standard solutions to obtain percent recovery. The average percent recovery of diuron from pechay was 71%. The minimum detection limit was 0.02 ug. The rapid method was found to be inapplicable to the soil probably due to the high adsorption of the compound on the soil.
