Abstract

Using modified Williamson ether synthesis, 1-0- dodecyl glyceryl ether was prepared from dodecyl bromide and 2,3-0-isopropylideneglycerol.

The dodecyl bromide was prepared from a commercial sample of dodecyl alcohol, PICOL 2095, while the 2,3-0- isopropylideneglycerol was prepared from a commercial sample of refined glycerol. The two starting materials were characterized by chemical tests, infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Glyceroxide formation was accomplished for 3 hours at 110-115 C while etherification was run for 7 hours at 100-105 . C. The final product was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and by determination of its physical characteristics. Percentage yield was 65.65% of the theoretical.
