Infection with Dactylogyrus sp. (Monogenea: dactylogyridae) among fishes in Laguna de Bay

Abstract
Monogenean ectoparasites are flatworms that infect mainly fishes. Heavy infestations of these parasites are known to cause fish disease and mortality in wild and cultured fish populations. The host distribution, prevalence, and parasite intensity of Dactylogyrus sp. were examined in fishes of Laguna de Bay. Nine freshwater fish species were collected from Laguna de Bay along the shores of Los Baños, Laguna. Their gills, fins, and scales were examined for the presence of Dactylogyrus. Out of the nine species collected, only three species were found to be infected with Dactylogyrus sp.. Aristicththys nobilis had the highest intensity (255.2±125), followed by Leiotherapon plumbeus (14.40±9.40), and Glossogobius giuris (0.64±1.57). Results showed that Dactylogyrus gill infection of L. plumbeus was weakly correlated with host size (r = 0.179). Dactylogyrus sp. was also shown to have significantly higher parasite intensities in the gill arch I, followed by gill arch II, III, and IV (p < 0.05), which may be attributed to the surface area and the water current exposure of the gill arches. Long-term studies are recommended to fully elucidate other factors affecting Dactylogyrus infection in fish populations in Laguna de Bay.
