Abstract

ROSALES, MYRA BAUTISTA, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Banos, October 2001. AN ACUTE TOXICITY STUDY ON THE EFFECTS OF LINEAR ALKYLIIENZENE SULFONATE ON TILAPIA (Oreochromis nilotica).

Adviser: Dr. Nieva T. Lihrojo-Basilio

An acute toxicity study on the effects of linear alkylbenzene sulfonatc (LAS) on Oreochromis nilotica was conducted from June to October 2001. Based on a 24-hour static range-finding test, a 96-hour flow-through system was applied for the definitive test. The water quality parameters determined include pH, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS) and dissolved oxygen (DO). LAS concentrations in the water samples were determined using the Methylene Blue-Active Substances (MBAS) method.

The range of values obtained for the different parameters were as follows: pH, 6.55 to 7.50; temperature, 25.97 °C to 30.66 °C; TDS, 258.33 to 285.67 mg/L and DO, 0.93 to 5.67 (mg/L). The pH and TDS values lie within the maximum acceptable/allowable level (MAL) set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for class C freshwaters. All values for the parameters, however, are tolerable for the tilapia species.

Statistical analyses showed that predisposing effects of temperature, total dissolved solids, pH and dissolved oxygen had no direct relationship with fish mortality. Other than the toxic effects of LAS on the fish, other factors were not significant in the study.
