Studies were conducted on the effect of different household practices on the residue level of lambda-cyhalothrin, a reaction product comprising equal quantities of (S)-a-eyano-3-phenoxybenzyl (Z)-(111,3R)-3-(2-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoroprop-I-enyl)- 2,2—dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate and (R)-ct-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl (Z)- (1S,3S)-3-(2-chloro-3,33-trifluoroprop-I-enyl)-2,2- dimethyl=cyclopropaneca rboxylate on bittergourd fruits.
The efficiency of extraction was validated by 87.45 % recovery. The limit of detection (LOD) was 2.65 x µg/g. Control samples were found to contain a mean concentration of 5.52 x ug/g lambda-cyhalothrin. The initial concentration of the unprocessed sample (134.46.0.52 µg/g) was reduced to 10.28.0.02 ug/g (pickling), 13.98.0.20 ug/g (broiling), 34.62.3.07 ug/g (boiling without cover), 35.57.3.18 ug/g (boiling with cover), 49.52.2.98 14,/g (rinsing with water) and 64.56.2.95 gg/g (soaking in water). Percent reduction of the insecticide were as follows: pickling, 92.36 %, broiling, 89.61 %; boiling without cover, 74.26 %; boiling with cover, 73.55 %; rinsing with water, 63.17 % and soaking in water, 51.98 %.
Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) revealed that the efficiency of reducing lambda-cyhalothrin residues in bittergourd were as follows: pickling and broiling > boiling with cover and boiling without cover > rinsing with water > soaking in water. Result of the t-test showed that the results between the washing treatments (soaking and rinsing) and between cooking (boiling with cover and boiling with cover) were not significantly different from each other. Statistical analysis concluded the efficacy of four household treatments in reducing lambda-cyhalothrin in bittergourd were as follows: pickling and broiling > rinsing with water > soaking in water.
