Abstract

SANCHEZ, GEOFFREY PAGARIGAN. College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Banos, March 1996. Water Quality Assessment of Diezmo River in Cabuyao, Laguna as a Source of Industrial Water.

Adviser: Dr. Nieva T. Librojo-Basilio

The quality of water of Diezmo river in Cabuyao, Laguna was evaluated during the months of April, May, June and July 1995 as a source of industrial water. Among the physico-chemical parameters analyzed were pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, chloride, total dissolved and suspended solids, hardness, and heavy metals such as iron. copper. zinc, cadmium and lead.

The values for pH and temperature ranged from 7.2 to 8.1 and 30.0 to 33.0°C, respectively. Dissolved oxygen gave values ranging from 2.4 to 7.8 mg/L. Chloride levels were observed to be in the range of 14.33 to 58.15 mg/L.

Total dissolved solids showed values ranging from 119 to 403 mg/L while total suspended solids ranged from 4 to 38 mg/L. Hardness gave values within the range of 43.12 to137.20 mg/L CaCO3.

Heavy metal concentrations were observed to be in the range of 0.455 to 1.299 mg/L for iron, 0.056 to 0.109 mg/L for copper, 0.069 to 0.303 mg/L for zinc, 0.0009 to 0.0018 mg/L for cadmium, and 0.008 to 0.033 mg/L for lead.

Statistical analysis of data showed a significant interaction between sampling site and time at 5% level in all parameters except for total suspended solids, hardness and copper.

All values obtained upstream fall within the permissible levels set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for industrial water supply class I and II. The low concentrations of dissolved oxygen and high levels of iron downstream restrict water usage for indusrial purposes.
