Abstract

TALIPAN, CHERRY MAE S. College of Agriculture — College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Banos. April 2010. Synthesis of 3-Cardanoxy-1,2- Propanediol Using Cardanol from Cashew (Anacardium occidentals L.) Nut Shell Liquid.

Adviser: HIDELISA P. HERNANDEZ, Ph. D.

Natural cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), an agricultural waste by-product, was extracted from the cashew nut shells using an oil expeller. Natural CNSL was heated with calcium hydroxide to produce cardanol-rich technical CNSL. Cardanol was isolated and purified by liquid-liquid extraction and chromatography.

Synthesis of 3-cardanoxy-1,2-propanediol was done through the base-catalyzed nucleophilic substitution reaction of cardanol and glycidol. The product was purified through vacuum liquid chromatography using DCM and DCM:ethyl acetate solvents. 11-1 and 'C NMIt analyses confirmed the structure of cardanol and its conversion to 3- cardanoxy-1,2-propanediol.
