Abstract

TAMAYO, JEFFREY PATERO College of Arts and Science. University of the Philippines Los Banos, October 2004 Water Quality Assessment of Groundwater in Barangay Putho-Tuntungin (Purok 1. 2 and 3), Los Banos, Laguna

Adviser. Dr Nieva T Librojo-Basilio

The groundwater quality of Barangay Putho-Tuntungin (Purok 1, 2 and 3) was evaluated using parameters such as pH, temperature, total dissolved solids, total hardness, chlorides, sulfates, nitrate-nitrogen, surfactant levels, major cations as sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium and trace metals like lead and iron by bimonthly sampling of nine selected sites from December 2003 to April 2004. A separate sampling was done for bacteriological study for the coliforin count in August 2004.

The data gathered were all statistically analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DART) with respect to location, time of collection, age and depth of wells.

The pH and temperature ranged from 6 I - 8.3 and 21 1 — 32.3 °C, respectively. The other values were as follows total dissolved solids-74 1 to 331, total hardness- 137.16 to 308.34, chlorides- 4.29 to 27 61, sulfates- 4 5 to 23 0, nitrate-nitrogen- 0 I to 8 02, CFAS concentration- 0.0616 to 0.1815, LAS concentration- 0.1299 to 0.4208, sodium- 10.79 to 71 84, potassium- 2.66 to 56.55, calcium- 10 64 to 48 75, magnesium- 1.57 to 14 69, lead-0 0215 to 0.0534, and iron- 0.0782 to 0 8403 mg/L The coliform count ranged from < 2 2 to 40 MPN/100 mL

The values obtained for total dissolved solids, chlorides, sulfates, nitrate-nitrogen, total hardness, CFAS concentration, major cations such as sodium, calcium and magnesium were all within the Maximum Allowable Limit (MAL) set by the DENR for Class A drinking water (1994) and Philippine Water Quality Standards

Sites 4, 6, 7 and 8 gave pH readings below the MAL of 6 5. LAS, potassium and iron concentrations showed high measurements exceeding the MAL of 0 2, 12 and 0.3 mg/L, respectively for most of the sampling sites Sit. 4, 6 and 7 did not conform to the MAL for coliform count that is below 2 2 This could be attributed to fecal contamination in the wastes produced by animals near the sites Only site 9 exceeded the MAL of 0 05 mg/L for lead The variations and effect of of time of collection, location, age and depth of the wells and their interactions differed with respect to the parameters being measured.
