Abstract

TAYAG, CHARITO L. College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Banos. October, 1993. VALIDATION AND STANDARDIZATION OF THE 4-AMINOANTIPYRINE COLORIMETRIC METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PHENOLS IN INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATERS.

Adviser: Prof. LILIA S. P. MADAMBA. The 4-aminoantipyrine colorimetric method for determination of phenol was studied and the factors critical to color development were optimized. The method was based on the reaction between phenol and aminoantipyrine in the presence of an oxidant in an alkaline solution.

Wavelength of maximum absorbance for the orange-colored complex was found to be 455 nm. Conditions that would give optimum color are pH of 9.5L0.1 , 2.5 mL of 29 4-aminoantipyrine solution and 5-minute color development. The color of the complex in chloroform was stable up to 24 hours.

Calibration sensitivity was calculated at 2.30±0.16 absorbance unit per ppm and the smallest concentration difference that can be measured by the procedure was 0.0017 ppm. The limit of detection was calculated to be 0.030 ppm in the chloroform extract or 0.003 ppm in the original sample. The coefficient of variation for the calibration curves obtained at different periods was 5.89.

The test method was applied to different water and wastewater samples. Pulp and paper wastewater sample was found to contain 38.2 ppm phenol while surface water, food industry and textile industry wastewater samples had concentrations below the detectable phenol level of 0.003 ppm. Recovery of spiked samples was found to be 90-95% with coefficient of variation ranging from 0.37% to 5.88%.
