Preliminary experiments involving the esterification of lauric acid with methanol catalyzed by extracellular lipase were carried out in closed flasks with shaking at room temperature. The effect of some parameters like the amount of water, methanol, enzyme, and incubation time were determined. The highest conversion yield for the effect of amount of methanol was 56.3 at 3.0 ml methanol and for the effect of amount of water, 52.9 % at 0.4 ml water. An increase in conversion yield was observed with an increase in the amount of enzyme used. Similar observations were noted for the effect of incubation time.
Thin layer chromatographic analysis of the product formed indicated the formation of methyl laurate. Further studies are needed to confirm the results.
