Abstract
A one-shot survey was conducted at the University of the Philippines at Los Baños (UPLB) among 100 undergraduate students to determine if exposure to Original Pilipino Music (OPM) was significantly related to the respondents value of nationalism. This study also sought to find out the extent by which UPLB students value nationalism and how this was related to the OPM type preferred. Further, this study sought to find out the general messages of OPM as perceived by the students. Using multiple linear regression, results showed that UPLB students exposure to OPM and their nationalism had no significant relationship. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) also revealed that the respondents'nationalism did not significantly differ with different types of OPM preferred. Further, the pop song was the most preferred type of OPM. Regarding their nationalism, the UPLB students were moderately nationalistic. For them, romantic love in general was the message sent by the OPM. Further study is recommended on the development of OPM with messages other than romantic love. Also, the utilization of music as an efficient message-carrier is advised.
