Abstract
This study determined the validity of the first attempt towards a Pilipino Readability Formula (PRF). Essential to this study is a procedure for analyzing Filipino reading materials from the PRF's and other studies'merits and limitations. The researcher used primary data from interviews with authors of the PRF and secondary data from books, journals and theses. Data were analyzed using the qualitative approach and a portion of quantitative analysis in the application of the formula. Results showed that predictor elements of Filipino readability are word familiarity (WF), word lenght (in letter spaces and in syllables), poly-synthetic index, human interest, sentence length (SL), sentence syntactical complexity (SSC) and content. The WF, SL and SSC were the elements used in the PRF. To use the PRF requires a word list, sentence classification table (that needs improvement), conversion table and a calculator. Potentials users of the formula are teachers, journalists and communication practitioners who has a good background in Filipino grammar. The PRF was found out to be not advisable for classroom use, time consuming, tedious, predicts readability of prose style only, has inconsistent figures and has unobjective predictor elements. As a conclusion, the PRF was found out to be no longer valid for today's use. A procedure was made improve the PRF.
