Abstract
The study aimed to determine the exposure level and perceptions of Puerto Princesa City residents on the credibility of metropolitan mass media. It was conducted in October-November 1989. The survey method using a six-page questionnaire , was used to gather data. The data was then analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and chi-square test. There were 113 respondents, randomly selected from four urban barangays namely : San Miguel, Maunladd, Liwanag and Milagrosa. Majority of the respondents were 15-30 years old (60.19%), female (52.29%), married (60.18%), college graduates and Roman Catholics. About 22.12% of the respondents were government employees with an annual income between ₱10,000 and ₱24,000. Almost all of the respondents were well-exposed to media such as newspaper, radio and television. Of the 113 respondents, 90 were exposed to newspaper, 82 of whom read newspaper for information. A little more than 40% of the newspaper readers were daily newspapers readers and spend 30 minutes to one hour a day reading newspapers. In terms of readership, Manila Bulletin got the highest rating followed by the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Non-readers of the newspapers cited lack of time as their main reason for not reading newspaper (17.39%). Ninety-six of the respondents were exposed to radio. About eighty-seven percent of them were daily listeners, spending minutes to one hour a day listening. News programs, likewise got the highest rating of listenership. Eighty-six of the respondents were exposed to TV, little below eight percent of whom were daily TV watchers, spending 2-3 hours a day to watch TV. Similarly, news programs got the highest rating of viewership. The newspaper and radio were regarded as the main sources of information. However, respondents regarded the newspaper to be most credible source of information. Among the respondents socio-demographic characteristics, age even was not found to be significantly related to newspapers exposure, radio and television. Television however was found to be significantly related only to the respondents' occupation. Sex, civil status, religion, educational attainment and family income were found not to be significantly related to newspaper, radio and television exposure. Likewise, occupation was the only variable found to be significantly related to the respondents' perception of the credibility of mass media.
