Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic forced many schools to close their physical classes and shift to online teaching to continue delivering education to students. This study explores the experiences of elementary school teachers in Legazpi, Albay, Philippines, as they shifted from traditional classroom instruction to online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study sought to answer three research questions: 1) What are the experiences of elementary school teachers in the shift to online teaching? 2) What are the challenges experienced by elementary school teachers with online teaching? 3) What strategies and methods did teachers adapt to address these challenges? The study employed a case study design, selected participants through purposive sampling, and utilized in-depth interviews as the primary data collection method. Thematic analysis was used to identify challenges and strategies from the interview data. The study found that elementary school teachers experienced initial challenges but demonstrated resilience and adaptability. They recognized the importance of continuous learning and acquiring new technological and pedagogical skills. The changing dynamics of student-teacher interactions and increased parental involvement were significant aspects of their online teaching experiences. The teachers experienced several challenges, including fear and anxiety, limited knowledge of online platforms, connectivity issues, frequent power interruptions, lack of resources, and maintaining student engagement. Teachers adapted by embracing continuous learning, seeking support from the school, colleagues, and family members, and employing creative approaches. The findings emphasize the importance of teacher training, support, and collaboration between teachers, parents, and students in navigating online teaching effectively.
