Abstract

The rise of prosumers within digital platforms enabled the flourishing of cyber communities like the EXO-L stan Twitter community, where EXO fans gather and participate in fan activities like fan fiction. Alternate universe (AU) is a kind of text and visual narrative form of fan fiction that typically recontextualized K-Pop idols into new settings and new backgrounds which manifests how fan authors shift the literary forms to conform to the possibilities and limitations of the platform. In this context, the study aimed to understand how the prosumption behavior of EXO-L fan authors influences the K-Pop fan fiction narratives published in the stan Twitter community. To accomplish this, the narratives and experiences of EXO-L fan authors on Twitter were gathered through a one-on-one semi-structured interview, a naturalistic observation, and then a textual analysis of their published AUS. The narratives were analyzed through a thematic analysis following Kligler-Vilenchik and Shresthova's Participatory Culture Civics Practices Framework. It was found that with the varying goals, motivations, and influences of fan authors in their communal participation, they become more influenced by new information, discussions, and perspectives of other people in addition to their own reinterpretations and experiences. These are reflected in their narrative building of AUS as these texts become a melting pot of sociocultural influences and nuanced reinterpretations. As a research-based creative work, this was then presented in a transmedia AU format to reinforce how fan prosumers connect, organize and mobilize, and inform within the community that significantly influences their narrative building of fan fiction.
