Abstract

This case study research documented the existence of a community theater group in Iriga City, that is the HIRAYA Productions. The research was pursued primarily to contribute to the limited local studies regarding theater groups and organizations in the Philippines, especially in the rural provinces. Specifically, it described the group's characteristics, roots, and developments, discussed their processes of producing a theater production, discovered their future plans, and recognized their perceived contributions to their community as a community theater group. The study was primarily guided by Bruce Tuckman's Stages of Group Development Theory wherein a budding organization undergoes the processes of forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. The primary data collection method was through face-to-face and online key informant interviews, supplemented with file acquisition. HIRAYA Productions is a youth-led and non-secular theater group born inside a church called Church of God (COG) - Iriga, located in Iriga City, Camarines Sur, Bicol Region. Its plays and storylines are drawn from Christian biblical passages treating it as the heart of their shows. It attempts to spread a message of hope, life, and its importance, especially to young people. The group staged three theater productions entitled, Hiraya, Dahilan, and Yapak and one film production called Hilom. For its future plans, the group, like most budding organizations, wishes to become bigger and have a better audience reach. By embodying a true community theater group, that is "by, of, and for the people," HIRAYA Productions considered themselves greatly contributory to the Philippine theater, their city, their immediate community, and themselves.
