Abstract

The present study is concerned with the representation of Philippine Indigenous Peoples in the selected Self-Learning Modules developed by the Department of Education. IPs are characterized by their distinct social and cultural groups; they share collective ancestral ties to the natural resources and land where they occupy. However, IPs continues to suffer stereotypes and discrimination which could be rooted from how they were presented in the public. This study relied on qualitative research using content analysis. The data corpus is composed of 60 SLMs from subjects Araling Panlipunan, Filipino, and EsP (Grades 1 to 3) and Araling Panlipunan and Filipino (Grades 4 to 6) which are all sourced from the DepEd Region IV CALABARZON through the Schools Division Office of Calamba, Laguna. The analysis found that there are discussions about IPs in the selected SLMs, however, the term “Indigenous Peoples” was not explicitly defined. Using the content analysis of text and images, it was found IPs are represented in the selected SLMs as people who have dark skin, curly hair, and thick lips. IPs were also presented to have positive values and abilities which are seldom portrayed in other platforms. However, the representation IPs in the selected SLMs are still poor and primitive even in the modern times. Moreover, although representation of some IPs is accurate in the selected SLMs, there are still underrepresentation of IPs which could lead to the proliferation of negative stereotypes and discrimination.
