Abstract

The School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP) provides malnourished elementary students with pasteurized or sterilized milk and nutrient-rich dietary items. It seeks to relieve hunger, improve nutritional status, raise academic achievement and school performance, and enhance cognitive function in students; in the case of this paper, in Special Education (SPED) students. SPED students are also under the said program, and these students are considered to be one of the most vulnerable to malnutrition. Since the data was published online, it only shows the effects on those enrolled in the Basic Education Curriculum (BEC), resulting in the creation of this study. This study generally aims to observe the said effects on SPED students regarding their physical characteristics, academic performance, and social development using anthropometric assessment and survey questionnaires. In the study, 100% of the respondents, a combination of parents/guardians and teachers/instructors, agreed that SBFP provided positive results for the SPED students in all three categories. Using anthropometric assessment on the provided data, it shows that there was a 37.5% decrease on the number of underweight SPED students and a 42.9% increase on the number of health SPED students. Lastly, the challenges observed by the researcher towards the provision of SBFP were lack of wide variety of food choices and fixed food scheduling wherein each day of the week has a constant food or meal being provided to each student.
