Abstract
A 90-day growing trial was conducted using a total of 250 cockerels of ISA Brown to determine the growth performance, carcass characteristics, and economic efficiency of the egg-type cockerels raised under free-range production system. Growth performance of the cockerels were evaluated in terms of feed intake (FI), body weight gain (BWG), feed to gain ratio (F/G), and mortality rate (MR). Carcass yield and carcass components were determined to evaluate carcass characteristics. Economic efficiency parameters such as feed cost (FC), value of gain (VG), feed cost per kilogram of gain (FC/BW), and margin over feed cost (MOFC) for each cockerel were computed. Overall ADFI, ADG, F/G, and MR resulted to 54.77g, 14.73g, 3.72, and 9.2% (0-85 days), respectively. A carcass yield of 70.70% was produced at day 90. The fat and skin component (10.99%) of the carcass obtained the lowest percentage relative to the whole carcass, while the lean meat had the highest (58.36%). A return of P133.19 over the feed cost per bird was gained. In conclusion, the results of the study suggested that rearing of ISA Brown cockerels under free-range production system for 90 days is economically efficient.
