Abstract
The effect of the varying potting media mix and Mykovam fertilizer on the growth response of date palm seedlings (Phoenix dactylifera L.) was observed over four months The experiment was laid out in a 2-factorial RCBD design, with each of the six treatments replicated six times. Results showed that the potting media mix of 1 garden soil: 1 carbonized rice hull: 1 compost (1 GS: 1 CRH: 1 C) performed effectively in no Mykovam application. On the other hand, I garden soil: 1 carbonized rice hull: 1 compost: 1 coco peat: 1 vermiculite (1 GS: 1 CRH: 1 C: 1 CP: 1 V) with Mykovam significantly (p< 0.05) enhanced stem girth (mm) and frond number of plants compared to the current potting mix (BP) used by the Blanco Dates Farm which was composed of garden soil, sand, and horse manure. The same trend can be seen in the root dry weight (g), frond dry weight (g), the absolute growth rate (AGR) trend of plant height, frond number, and frond length corroborated by the relative growth rate (RGR); and the biomass partitioning after four months growing period. The findings indicated that the application and variation in soil amendments affect date palm growth. Without the Mykovam, the soil medium with coco peat and vermiculite exhibited less efficient aeration and water retention than the soil medium with coco peat and vermiculite. This can be due to changes in water availability and holding capacity between medium types.
