Abstract
This study attempts to determine the different factors affecting the housing maintenance and repair expenditures of households in the Philippines. The analytical framework used is based on tradition unitary model where a household head is considered a single decision maker for the household. Tobit regression was used to provide unbiased results.
Using the dataset of 2012 Family Income and Expenditure Survey by the National Statistics Office (NSO), and records of 2011 to 2012 Tropical cyclone encounters of the country from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the study identified the significant factors affecting the housing maintenance and repair expenditures of the households in the country. These includes the total income, number of members, and type of the household, the age, sex, marital status, educational attainment, and employment of head of household, the type of house, construction materials for walls and roof of the house, the location of the house and the typhoon encounter of the house.
The study found out that household characteristics and housing attributes significantly affect the expenditure for maintenance and repairs of the dwelling of households, except urban/rural classification of the location of the dwelling.
