Abstract
Despite numerous scientific studies, there is still a lack of awareness when it comes to the health effects of probiotics. Little research has been done on consumers' perceptions of probiotic foods and their influence on consumption. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and dietary practices toward probiotic dairy products among Filipino consumers in Oriental Mindoro, Philippines. Using convenience sampling, the study surveyed a total of 367 respondents. The results showed that a vast majority of the participants consume probiotic yogurt and yogurt drinks. Most respondents cited supermarkets as their preferred place for purchasing probiotic dairy products. Results also revealed that most consumers give more importance to the flavor and aroma rather than the appearance of the products. The health benefits, nutritive value, and sensory quality are the main factors considered by consumers in buying such products. Most of the participants perceive probiotic dairy products as expensive but safer, healthier, more nutritious, and with better sensory quality than regular dairy products. Consequently, more than half of the respondents are willing to add probiotic dairy products to their regular diet. The results also revealed that the intake of probiotic dairy products was not associated with respondents' sociodemographic profile and health status.
