Abstract
Calamansi, as one the major fruit crops in the country, is used for food and non-food products. Given that Philippines is a sole major exporter, it is in demand in the neighboring countries, as well as in the US. As the continuous decline of calamansi production is observed in the recent years, this study aimed to assess its production status on Region III (Central Luzon), Which belongs to the country’s top calamansi producers. Survey data from the 26 calamansi farmers from different provinces in Central Luzon were analyzed to evaluate valuable information that influences the production. Online interviews using social media platforms were also employed to identify the advantages and issues on its cultivation. Secondary data from national and regional records in relation to calamansi production were also examined. Results shown that most of the calamansi farmers works on at most three hectares of land, yielding three metric tons on the average yearly, which is subsequently sold at PHP24.00 per kilogram. Expensive inputs, overproduction, disinterest of youth towards agriculture, as well as lack of government support on calamansi industry were the issues highlighted by the respondents. Result also showed that the difference between calamansi yield of regional and national yield is statistically significant, meaning that a change in the former still bears effects to the latter. Lastly, recommendations to cater the problems, particularly stronger agricultural extension and policy, and public enlightenment towards the importance of agriculture were proposed.
