Abstract
A simple and sensitive extractive spectrophotometric method is described for the quantitative determination of alkaloid content in flesh of commercial cultivars of papaya. The developed method is based on the formation of a colored ion-pair complex of carpaine and bromcresol green (BCG) in buffer pH 3.0 and extraction in chloroform. The extracted complex showed an absorption maxima at 414.0 nm. The absorbance of the complex obeyed Beer's Law over the concetration 4-20 ug capraine per ml of chloroform. The procedure can be carried out in the presence of other compounds withoud interference.
