Abstract

In the College of Development Communication (CDC) at the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB), graduates of Bachelor of Science in Development Communication (BSDC) are expected to be knowledgeable in the production of media-based learnings systems (MBLS). A media-based learning system in CDC is defined as "an organized, integrated process that optimizes the potentials of communication media in facilitating learning (Daya & Cabrera, 2018, p.18). The main objective of this study was to analyze the contents and trends of the produced MBLSs of DEVC 144 classes in CDC UPLB from 2019-2023 in term of types, domains of learning objectives, learning assessments, learners, and learning areas. Employing a quantitative approach, this study conducted analysis to address the research questions. A total of 72 MBLS were examined by the researcher and two BSDC student encoders. Instruments such as a coding book and coding sheet were utilized to document the MBLS content, and data was subjected to interrater agreement testing via Fliess Kappa to determine the validity of the instrument, agreement of the raters' evaluations, and to confirm that the agreement does not happen by chance. The research revealed that there was a reduction in the production of certain MBLS, while others have emerged post- pandemic. The cognitive learning domain presented as the most prevalent, and the objective type of learning assessment was the most frequently used. The demographic of MBLS learners is diverse, with elementary students as the majority. Additionally, a variety of learning areas were found, with Language being the predominant. For now, there is no clear evidence of trends from pre-pandemic, during the pandemic, and up to the post-pandemic period. The researcher recommended continuing to explore the MBLS produced by the CDC as it will contribute to the lack of studies on the subject matter, and it can reveal the use and construct of MBLSs.
