Abstract
Carica papaya, a well-recognized medicinal and food plant was studied for its alkaloid production. Histochemical tests showed that the alkaloids were mostly localized in the mesophyll tissue of the leaf. Alka- loids were also found in the root and stem, though at a lower concentration. Indoleacetic acid and kinetin generally increase alkaloid production of the plant, the latter being more effective than the former. Combination of IAA and Ki treatment showed an antagonistic type of interaction thesis.
