Abstract

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of rice, C4-137 and 04-63, to different levels of NaC1. In both experiments, seeds were pretreated with different levels of CaCl2 for 24 hours and treated with NaCl.

In the first experiment, germination and seedling development were depressed at higher NaCl level and completely inhibited at the highest level. Imbibition of water by the germinating seeds was reduced by the increasing salinity of the germinating medium. At the higher level of NaC1, CaCl2- pretreated seeds exhibited improvement of germination and development, however, pretreatment did not change the amount of water imbibed appreciably.

Seeds which failed to germinate at the higher NaCl levels germinated and developed normally when removed from the saline medium to plain distilled water.

In the second experiment, development and growth of C4-63 seedlings in culture solution were inhibited in

highest Nall level. The plants derived from GaClz- pretreated seeds showed n respectively vigorous growth and faster recovery from salt injury. Ionic accumulation and distribution were also observed to be altered by both salts.
