Abstract

The vegetative and reproductive organs of the four species of Desmodium namely, Desmodium triflorum (Linn.) DC., D. scorpiurus (Sw.) Desv., D. procumbens (Mill.) A.S. Hitchc. and D. pulchellum (Linn.) Benth.

Morphological features were found to be a basis of identi- fying each species with respect to their similarities and differ- ences in their external structures. Observations on the gross morphological aspects of the four species from germination to maturity are also presented.

Germination in the species studied differ in rate which is caused by some factors. Epigeal germination was observed for all the species. The sizes of seedlings differ from each other and the formation of roots also varied. Shapes of nodules with regards to these species ranges from globose to globose- streaked only. With light brown, brown with white steak and pale to dark brown colors. Branching habit were sympodial in pattern.

The venation patterns in the leaf and leaf- lets are all of brochidodromous type. The individual trichomes were uniseriate and cylindrical in shape. Most of the species have trifoliolate leaves, one has a simple one. Stipules were found to be present. Pubescence was either abaxial or adaxial and flowers were papilionaceous. Fruits are loment and has a kidney shape seeds, but some are elongate.

The two species D. triflorum and D. scorpiurus resembles many features in common. D. procumbens and D. pulchellum differ from each other in many aspects.
