Abstract

Cadiz, Nina Micosa, University of the Philippines at Los Baños, June, 1981. Calcium Chloride as a Polential Amoliorant for Pro- Emergent Herbicide-Treated Seeds and Seedlings.

The effectiveness of calcium as an ameliorant of antidote in counteracting the inhibitory effects of the herbicides used, namely: pendimethalin, trifluralin and butachlor, was studied. This was evaluated using percent germination, root and hypocotyl weight, fresh and dry weight, as well as the morphological conditions of the seedlings Pretreated with calcium solutions.

The results showed that CaCl2 pretreatment had no significant effects on germination. Visual observations revealed that trifluralin was the most inhibitory, while butachlor the least. The effect of CaCl2 pretreatment on root and hypocotyl weight was significant. However, nonsignificant results were obtained with regards to their fresh and dry weights.

Concentrations of 0.6M and 0.7M CaCl2 as seed pretreatment seemed to be effective in counteracting the inhibitory effects of the herbicides. The combination of herbicide with 100ppm rating effect against herbicide toxicities.
