Abstract
Ardales, Elvira Y. University of the Philippines at Los Baños, May, 1982. Evaluation of the Growth of Scenedesmus abundans in TBIM, Soil Water Extract and Coconut oir Extract.
Three types of media, Tris-buffered inorganic medium (control), soil water extract (5%) and coconut coir extract (10%), were tested for their suitability as substrates for the culture of Scenedesmus abundans. Cell density was highest in Tris-buffered inorganic medium and lowest in coconut coir extract. The same trend was observed with respect to dry weight yield at the end of fourteen days. Algae grown in coconut coir extract were bigger with few and short spines while those in Tris-buffered inorganic medium and soil water extract were smaller with extensive spine forma tion. Yellowing of the cytoplasm was observed in cells grown in coconut coir extract.
