Abstract

Forty-eight broiler farms were surveyed using online platform to compare the production practices of broiler farms catering to big bird (BB) and lechon manok (LM) markets in the Philippines. The results showed that majority of respondents producing BB can be found in CALABARZON, while most of the farms producing LM were in Visayas and Mindanao. LM farms practiced contract growing, while most of BB farms practiced independent raising. Both LM and BB farms catered to all market segments but mostly to wet markets. BB farms have higher number of poultry houses per site and population of broilers per farm. LM farms have higher number of cropping in a year. Most of the LM and BB farms use climate-controlled type of housing and all-in-all-out system of raising. Majority of the LM and BB farms used elevated plastic slats as flooring material. All farms have vaccination, basic biosecurity, and bird welfare monitoring programs. However, management practices were not significantly associated with the type of farm. Data obtained from this study can be used as a baseline information in assessing the practices of commercial broiler chicken raisers in the country.
