Abstract

Definite nitrogen, potassium, sulfur and magnesium deficiency symptoms were manifested by coconut plants grown in sand and given a modified Hoagland's solution No. 2. The deficiency symptoms were accompanied by a low concentration of the element in the foliage.

No definite calcium and phosphorus deficiency symptoms were shown by the plants in the absence of these elements in the culture solution, although the calcium-free plants maintained a "tucked-in" binding of the fronds, and the phosphorus-free plants were the most susceptible to the leaf- spot causing fungus.

Results of leaf analyses indicate that a more reliable index of the amount of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in the plant can be obtained when analyses are done on the newly- opened leaves.

No definite responses were shown by coconut plants given copper-deficient solution along with an excess amount of nitro- gen, manganese, zinc and iron.
