Abstract
The research internship took place at the Institute of Animal Science, College of Agriculture and Food Science, University of the Philippines Los Baños. The purpose of the research internship was to enhance the interns’ analytical understanding of the theoretical foundations of the major techniques and protocols in their research field , as well as to proficiently exhibit their abilities in performing the laboratory techniques. The internship encompassed a range of laboratory procedures, such as, sample preparation and collection, DNA extraction, reagent formulation, restriction enzyme digestion, and genotyping. Additionally, the data gathered during the internship was used to identify polymorphisms within the sample population of Batanes Native Cattle pertaining to the Kappa Casein gene. The gene is responsible for the total protein yield of milk in dairy cattle. This gene is highly important in various dairy products, specifically cheese production. Finding polymorphism in the population of Batanes Native Cattle will help researchers on creating the appropriate breeding program to improve the native breed.
