Abstract

The allelopathic potential of methanolic extracts of Ageratum conyzoides on lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and radish (Raphanus sativus) was instigated. Specifically, the effect of foliar damage (0, 6, 12, 24 hrs) on the germination percentage, accumulated germination index and radicle length were assessed using bioassay tests. Prepared extracts were placed on Petri dish lined with filter paper containing either 30 lettuce or 10 radish seeds. Final germination percentage and accumulated germination index of lettuce were reduced as defoliation increased and as extraction was delayed after damage. Radicle length in lettuce and radish behaved similarly, though, a slight radicle elongation stimulation was observed in radish as time of sampling was delayed across degree of defoliation. Delays in expected responses may be due to the inability of the plants to produce enough inhibitory compounds which may be a function time and stage growth. Ageratum conyzoides can be a source of bioherbicides and can be used for further weed control approaches less damaging to the environment.
