Abstract

To determine the effect of water hyacinth (WH) on the concentration of ruminal metabolites, namely acetic, propionix, butyric acida, and total soluble proteins (TSP), eight six-months old growing dairy steers were divided into two groups and randomly assigned to a ration containing either (0% or 20% WH). Gas chromatography and Bradford protein micro-assay were used to measure the volatile fatty acids and TSP, respectively. Data were analyzed using t-test. Results showed no significant differences between the ruminal VFA and TSP concentrations of treatment groups fed diets with 0% and 20% WH. Concentrations of acetic (1873.9-4492.8 ppm), propionic (742.9-1721.2 ppm), and butyric (533.7-1132.9 ppm) acids in both groups were in normal range. TSP were in the range of 0.35-0.50 mg/ml and 0.42-0.52 mg/ml for 0% and 20%, respectively. Results suggest that WH included at 20% of the ration do not affect the ruminal concentration of major volatile fatty acids and total soluble proteins of growing dairy steers.
