Abstract
The intensive rearing system has been widely used in the poultry industry to maximize farm efficiency and productivity; it involved caging chickens and culling male layers. The public perceived intensive rearing to be in violation of animal welfare rules, thus alternative systems such as free-range rearing were developed. The free-range system did not only answer the issues imposed by the intensive rearing system, but it also provided opportunities to farmers as the trend for organically sourced products began to rise. A free-range farm owner was interviewed regarding the marketability of free-range products and it was found to be feasible in the Philippines. To help further increase the profitability of free-range products, a business proposal was formulated based on Philippine standards for free-range chickens and the free-range farm's management practices.
