Abstract

Postharvest diseases brought by several microorganisms represent serious threats to the vegetable industry and the demand for novel antimicrobial alternatives is rising to ensure higher quality standards and food safety of fresh produce. Numerous researches paid emphasis toward the genus Diospyros and employed phytochemical screening and bioactivity analysis using its extracts. With the main objective of comparatively examining the antimicrobial potential of six Diospyros species, namely D. blancoi, D. kaki, D malabarica, D. mespiliformis, D. monbuttensis and D. peregrine, the systematic review was directed to four electronic databases: Google Scholar, PubMed, ResearchGate and ScienceDirect, following the PRISMA model. The literature search identified a total 20 publications, which passed the rigorous screening process using clear inclusion and exclusion criteria. Antimicrobial activity was assessed based on three groupings: plant species, extraction solvent and plant tissue using the tabulated data of diameter of inhibition zone (DIZ). As determined by one-way ANOVA using Tukey's HSD test, there were statistically significant differences between D. kaki and D. malabarica for the plant species group, followed by chloroform plus water and petroleum ether plus water for the extraction solvent group, while there was none for the plant tissues group.
