Abstract
A study was conducted to determine the effects of different levels of guava (Psidium guajava linn) leaf meal on the performance and fecal Escherichia coli count of starter pigs. A total of sixteen crossbred (landrace x large white) starter pigs were selected, blocked according to weight and were placed each block in a pen with 4 divisions following a randomized completely block design (RCBD). Each treatment was replicated 4 times with 1 pig per replicate. The results showed that the guava leaf meal supplementation of diet fed to starter pigs for 15days had no significant effect on the daily body weight gain and feed efficiency (P>0.05). However, significant difference on the feed consumption and average daily feed consumption of the pigs on the first 15 days of feeding was significantly low (P<0.05). Pigs fed starter diet with 5.0% guava leaf meal were the most feed cost efficient among treatments. Furthermore, the guava leaf meal decreased the E. coli population in the fecal matter but not significantly influenced the occurrence of scouring in pigs.
