Abstract
The study attempted to obtain optimum operating parameters of the threshing unit of the rice combine harvester. The significance of the three independent parameters: wind deflector angle, oscillating sieve angle, and size of blower intake opening, on the response variables: aspiration loss, blower loss, and purity, were tested statistically using SAS program. Optimum parameters were obtained through desirability profiler of the STATISTICA software.
This study involved a 15-run experiment with the Box and Behnken used as the experimental design. The combine was operated at certain combinations as dictated by the design matrix. It was operated at levels 1, 3, and 5 of wind deflector angle, having 0°, 18°, and 36° of oscillating sieve angle and levels 1, 2, and 3 of blower intake opening. Response surface methodology of SAS showed that only the wind deflector angle significantly affected the aspiration loss. Purity was affected significantly by blower intake opening and oscillating sieve angle. Blower loss was affected significantly by all the independent parameters. The optimum operating settings obtained were 0° wind deflector angle, 18° oscillating sieve angle and 1⁄2 opened blower setting.
Predictor equations for each response variable were generated using response surface regression procedure and it was predicted that at 95% level of confidence, the value of separation loss, blower loss and purity, using the optimum operating values, were 0.33%, 0.024% and 98.35% respectively.
